And didn’t end up with a good view anyway. I know it’s lovely when it’s open, but right now, April 2026 it’s really disappointing
The square is not open to the public. I don’t know why the status is not changed to accurately reflect the current situation. There was a security fence placed through much of 2020 due to Black Lives Matter protest. The the fencing was taken down after Trump‘s removal from office, but placed back up for his second term. I’m not sure why this is but much of them all is also closed during the administration. I’ve been here since the Oklahoma City bombings, and even during 9/11 I’ve never seen so much security precautions. It’s a shame it was a beautiful park and a nice little area to relax after exploring DC and seeing the White House, maybe it’s just the day I went for Pennsylvania Avenue was closed down as well so there’s physically no way to get within three city blocks of the White House and either direction
My wife and I were visiting Washington in the Summer of 2026. H Street was the closest we could get to view the White House. We viewed the White House through a temporary security fence setup by President Trump. We were appalled by the far away view and we wished that the fences would be torn down (similar to what President Reagan said about the Berlin Wall in the 80s LOL) Hopefully someday the view will be restored for the people to enjoy.
Beautiful park at the intersection of 16th and H NW. Four statues at the corners anchor a central statue of Jackson. Excellent views of the North facade of the White House. Can be pretty busy at times, but a great spot for a walk as the grounds are beautiful.
Lafayette Square is a beautiful and historic park that offers one of the best views of the White House. It’s a peaceful place to relax, take photos, and soak in the atmosphere of one of the most famous locations in the world. The park is filled with statues, trees, and benches, and it’s surrounded by impressive historic buildings that add to the charm. You’ll often see tourists, locals, and peaceful demonstrations here — which makes it feel lively and connected to the spirit of democracy. The view of the White House, especially at sunset or in the evening, is absolutely stunning. A perfect stop for anyone visiting D.C. — full of history, symbolism, and great photo opportunities.
