John Logan (1826-1886) was a Democratic congressman from Illinois when the Civil War began. While serving as congressman, he volunteered and served in the US Army at the first battle of Manassas. He resigned his seat in Congress in 1862 and entered the US Army as a colonel. He served in the western campaign and rose to the level of corps commander by 1864. Returning to politics after the war as a radical Republican, he served in the House from 1867 to 1871, then in the Senate
