Philip Sheridan (1831-1888) was a US Army officer during the American Civil War. He fought in the western theater and Virginia, aiding in the capture of Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia at Appomatox in 1865. After the war, he was appointed commander of the Military District of the Southwest. Eventually he rose to the rank of General of the Army in 1888.
