About

In front of you a statue of George Mason holds a book by Cicero, a Roman politician and orator. Mason used ideas from Cicero and others to write the Virginia Declaration of Rights in May of 1776, the first document to protect individual rights in the United States. The document served as inspiration for the Declaration of Independence written weeks later.

The George Mason Memorial ended up being one of the most peaceful places we visited in Washington, DC. We brought a picnic and had the entire area almost to ourselves, which made for a relaxing break from the busy National Mall. The gardens are beautifully maintained, the fountain adds to the calm atmosphere, and the memorial itself is thoughtfully designed. It's a hidden gem that's easy to overlook, but if you're looking for a quiet spot to unwind, enjoy lunch, or simply take a break from sightseeing, I highly recommend stopping here.

A peaceful and meaningful hidden gem in Washington, D.C. — the George Mason Memorial. It is less crowded than many famous landmarks, with beautiful greenery, a tranquil pond, and a statue of George Mason sitting thoughtfully in the memorial garden. A lovely place to walk, relax, and appreciate the history and beauty of our nation’s capital during the holidays

Off the beaten path but worth it. Considered a forgotten founder, this memorial is a touching tribute to George Mason. We always wonder what he is staring at and what he is thinking about. Next time you visit, sit down with George and just relax and take it in.

This is a really over looked DC memorial for a really overlooked Founding Father who had a profound importance on the creation of the Bill of Rights. Considering how close it is to the very popular Jefferson memorial, it is a quite place to sit and relax with a beautiful fountain as well as a statue to the man himself.

The George Mason Memorial commemorates George Mason, a founding father, and author of the Virginia Declaration of Rights. The memorial features a reflecting pool, surrounded by flower beds, and benches for seating. A bronze statue of George Mason, and some of his inscribed writings are located under the trellis on the west end of the memorial.
