About
The Columbus Fountain features a statue of Christopher Columbus, a globe, and figures representing the old and new worlds. Columbus (1451-1506) was an Italian explorer who in 1492 sailed west in the Atlantic Ocean for the Spanish monarchy, opening the age of European exploration and colonization of the Americas.

The Columbus Circle fountain at Union Station in Washington, D.C., was restored and reopened on May 28, 2026, marking the first time water has flowed since 2007. This restoration was executed under the Trump administration as part of the "Making the District of Columbia Safe and Beautiful" initiative, with Interior Secretary Doug Burgum and Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy leading the ribbon-cutting ceremony.
Marvelous and inspiring monument with Union Station in the background and the Capitol back behind. It was enjoyable even on a hot and humid July day with liberal protesters to the side. A nice tribute to the discovery that led to the founding of our remarkable nation.
Did you know a different fountain would have been here? Three days with parades, concerts and fireworks and a gathering tens of thousands of people happened after the unveiling of this sculpture in 1912. The government in 1906 planned a different fountain but after lobbying by a Christian group called the Knight of Columbus, a competition started where the second and third best designers would get $500 each while the first prize would receive $20,000.
Beautiful fountain when it is running, which it was last I was here.looks so much bigger than the photos show.
